Surprise, Arizona

Surprise is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona. The population is estimated at over 100,000 in 2007. It is the second fastest growing metro municipality in the greater Phoenix area. Surprise is about 20 miles northwest of Phoenix.

The city was founded in 1938 by real estate developer Homer C. Ludden who named it after his hometown of Surprise, Nebraska.

Ten of thousands of retirees moved to the cit in the 1990s to 2000s to live in Sun City Grand, and age restricted resort like community, built by developer Del Webb.

The city is the spring training home of the Kansas Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams. The major league teams use Surprise stadium for their spring training.
